| Professor Danny Keenan operates at The Alexandra Hospital and consults in The Beeches Consulting Centre, in the grounds of the hospital. He set up the very successful Cardiac Programme more than 20 years ago. The facilities in The Alexandra Hospital for open heart surgery and invasive cardiological investigations and treatments are excellent with fully equipped theatres, intensive care unit and medical and nursing back-up. He is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Manchester Heart Centre, based at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and was Clinical Director of this large and successful unit in central Manchester from 1998 until 2002. He is honorary Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery to the University of Manchester. | |||||
| Surgery Mr Keenan has vast experience in heart and lung procedures. |
These include: |
| Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (Heart Bypass) Danny Keenan is extremely interested in advancing this highly successful operation and has developed the technique of arterial revascularisation with the use of both internal mammary arteries along with radial artery harvesting from the arm. |
| Some of his coronary artery bypass grafting operations are performed using the OPCAB (beating heart method). This technique may be less traumatic to the body as the heart is kept beating during surgery. This may enable the major important organs of the body, for example, brain, kidneys, liver etc. to be perfused with blood naturally throughout the entire procedure. Patients are carefully chosen for this procedure. |
| He has pioneered the minimally invasive approach, known as the MIDCAB operation, for certain coronary artery problems. This is an off-pump procedure carried out through a small incision under the left nipple with the left internal mammary artery being grafted onto the main coronary artery at the front of the heart. This operation is applicable in a small number of patients, some of whom may have had previous surgery. | |||||
| In addition, he has been exploring ways of performing bypass operations cosmetically, using the endoscopic vein harvesting technique to remove the saphenous vein from the leg. In this way it is possible to remove vein using a small incision and not along the whole length of the leg. | |||||
| Pursuing cosmetic incisions: Professor Keenan has performed the OPCAB procedure in women using a submammary approach. The incision is made under both breasts making it much less obtrusive. He runs a clinic at The Beeches dealing with some of the poorer cosmetic results following on from open heart surgery incisions. |
| Repeat Coronary Surgery The techniques required to safely perform repeat heart operations are different from primary operations. He has gained the experience and expertise in performing such operations from a practice extending over many years. There is a large volume of such patients presenting for repeat operations, some for repeat grafting and others for valve procedures. He has contributed to the literature in developing strategies to keep such operations safe. |
| The Elderly In relation to the elderly, many more such patients are presenting for surgery, and do very well following valve, bypass and combined operations. In fact the risks of surgery only really increase in the over 75¹s and even then the risks are not particularly high. |

Heart Valve Surgery |
| Adult Congenital Heart Surgery Danny Keenan developed this surgery in the North West and it has lead to a major review of the service through the auspices of the North West Strategic Health Authority. A major business case was developed and accepted, and as a result the first appointments, adult congenital cardiologists and a surgeon with specialist nurses, have been made. |

| Teaching and Research He has participated in live surgical training video-conferences in Manchester and London. Also he lectures and presents papers at major international cardiac meetings. |
| In regards to audit, all his results are scrutinised by himself and in a peer review process by both hospitals, and the North West Region of England audit group. | |||||
| Contribution to Healthcare Development He is a highly successful surgeon whose expertise in developing high quality services has lead to the executive role of National Clinical Advisor to the Healthcare Commission and subsequently the Care Quality Commission, membership of the National Clinical Audit Advisory Group and membership of the Data Management Group of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He conceived a strategy, for the Healthcare Commission, to enroll the clinical community in the measurement of clinical quality with the aim of improving it. He has experience in developing, leading and modernising services, with extensive clinical and management experience in the NHS. He has brought to fruition important business cases both in the Trust and Greater Manchester. He has a unique record in the use of information to support the provision of a high quality service, the development of clinical governance, standards and patient involvement and the development of new services harnessing the multidisciplinary team and streamlining of the patient pathway. He has contributed and improved services using data and audits which lead to important research projects. In addition he has collaborated with the cardiovascular research group in the University of Manchester. He has contributed to the teaching and training of students, trainee surgeons and junior consultants. He has drive and enthusiasm and the ability to motivate and empower the entire multidisciplinary team. |
